July 28th
Crayfish Workshop
On Thursday, July 28th at 5:30 pm a crayfish
workshop was held at the Gordon/Wascott EMT
Base Station at 14511 South Highway 53 in Gordon. It is located on the west
side of Highway 53 across the highway from the Tradin Post. The exit road
is marked as Snowberry Lane.
The training session
takes about 3 hours.
Participants will learn methods for collecting and preserving crayfish
for a UW-DNR research study to determine the distribution of the various
types of crayfish in the headwaters area, including the invasive Rusty crayfish.
Kris Stepenuck, UW-Extension, will bring several sets of monitoring
equipment that will be shared by those participating in the study.
Along with collecting crayfish, participants will collect dissolved
oxygen (like with the WAV program), temperature, conductivity (with a simple
pen-like instrument), pH (with test strips), and GPS coordinates for the
monitoring site.
